Specialist Lubrication for Food Processing

Food and beverage production environments place demanding requirements on machinery and maintenance teams.
Production equipment needs to operate reliably, often in environments involving water, steam, temperature extremes, frequent wash-downs, heavy loads and continuous operation.

Lubrication is an important part of maintaining equipment, reducing friction and wear, protecting components and helping machinery operate effectively.

However, lubrication products used around food-processing equipment need to be selected carefully according to the application and the potential for contact with food or food-contact surfaces.

That's where specialist food-grade lubricants come in.

MDM Industrial Supplies provides access to a range of food-safe lubrication products from Mako-Lube, including specialist Food-Tek oils, greases, chain lubricants and maintenance products.

Mako-Lube's current Food-Tek range includes NSF-registered products for food, beverage, pharmaceutical and other clean-industry applications.

What Does NSF H1 Mean?

NSF H1 is an important classification when selecting lubricants for food-processing environments.

NSF H1 registration applies to lubricants that are suitable for use where incidental food contact may occur.

We can supply a range of Food-Tek products that are NSF H1 registered. For example, Food-Tek Synfood Grease range is NSF H1 registered and is designed for applications including bearings, bushes, slides and guides in food and clean industries.

Another example is Mako-Lube Food-Tek Clear Chain Lube H1, which is listed as NSF H1 registered and designed for chain lubrication, including conveyor and high-temperature applications.

Important

NSF H1 registration should always be checked against the individual product and its intended application.

Not every lubricant described as “food grade” should automatically be assumed to be NSF H1 registered.

For this reason, MDM can provide the relevant product information and technical documentation when you're selecting a lubricant.

Food Grade 3H Lubricants

Some food-processing applications require a different type of product from an H1 lubricant.

Mako-Lube also supplies Food-Tek Food Grade Oil 3H, a specialist product designed as both a direct food-contact release agent and food-grade lubricant for appropriate applications. Its technical documentation identifies it as NSF 3H and H1 registered.

The product is designed for applications including:

  • Seals
  • Mincer plates
  • Mixers
  • Slicers
  • Loaf pans
  • Hooks
  • Slides
  • Guides

The technical documentation gives a stated working temperature range of -18°C to +200°C for this specific product.

Important distinction

H1 and 3H are not interchangeable classifications.

The appropriate product should be selected according to the application and the manufacturer's technical information.

If you're unsure whether you need an H1 lubricant, a 3H product or another specialist product, contact MDM before purchasing.

H1 vs 3H

What's the Difference?

H1 Lubricants

NSF H1 lubricants are intended for applications where incidental food contact may occur.
They are commonly used for lubricating machinery and equipment in food-processing environments where incidental contact is possible.

3H Products

NSF 3H products are associated with specific applications as release agents where direct food contact is intended or unavoidable, subject to the product's approved use.
Mako-Lube's Food Grade Oil 3H, for example, is documented as a direct food-contact release agent and food-grade lubricant and is listed as NSF 3H and H1 registered. MakoLube Portal

The important point

H1 does not mean “safe to deliberately mix with food”, and 3H does not mean that every 3H product is suitable for every direct-contact application.

Always check the individual product documentation and intended application.
